I sadly wasn't able to see MasterVoices' concert staging of The Frogs (https://www.mastervoices.org/events/the-frogs/) two weekends ago, but the NYT ran this interesting piece about them on Monday:
MasterVoices Puts on a Starry Show With a Shoestring Budget
This essential organization gives fresh, entertaining life to music theater curiosities. What if it had more money? (https://www.nytimes.com/2023/11/13/arts/music/mastervoices-the-frogs.html?unlocked_article_code=1.-kw.5kdA.FJzI63_dbkkR&smid=url-share)
The chorus of 130 sounds especially lovely for this musical. I think the strongest part of the score is the choral work.
I agree, Kathy!
I really wish MV would bring this back for an encore performance or two. :'(
This audio recording of the original 1974 Yale Rep production has apparently been up on YouTube for almost seven years, but I just discovered it now.
Given the pool acoustics ("the echo sometimes lasts for days..."), it's easy to miss a lot of words, but if one had the patience I suspect it wouldn't be
too hard — and would certainly be helpful — to make a transcript (and/or to digitally clean up the sound for clearer audibility). I don't currently have that patience (or audio expertise), but in light of its age and the circumstances under which it was made, this recording actually sounds better than I would have expected, especially through headphones.
