Title: April 18, The Crucible Musical
Post by: mrssondheim on Apr 18, 2019, 09:28 AM
Good morning! Thought before coffee. I am going to see a production of The Crucible tonight.
I wonder why this hasn't been made into a musical. An 11 O'Clock number about Johns signature. A girls number about boys with Abigail and her friends. Danforth could have a big tap number....

But seriously. It could be a bitchen musical in the correct hands.

I thought it was made into an opera. Maybe I'm just imagining things.

Kathy, you are correct. An opera by Robert Ward based on the play won the Pulitzer prize for music in 1962. It is revived by regional opera companies now and then. My partner sang John Proctor in a production in Chicago maybe 15 years ago. It was before I met him, so I did not hear it.

I can imagine a heartbreaking number from Tituba lamenting her lost childhood and foreseeing tragedy.
