Title: I Love Dick (Amazon)
Post by: KathyB on Jun 21, 2017, 07:14 PM
My latest obsession. Has anybody else watched this? I'm on the verge of doing another binge-watch of the entire series (eight episodes).

I can very much relate to the pretentious artists/art crowd. Or maybe not so much "relate" as "understandingly roll my eyes at."  ::) Kind of the same feeling I always get when I listen to the "Putting It Together" scene in Sunday in the Park with George (to bring things on topic).

Kathryn Hahn kicks some major butt, but honestly, nobody gives a bad performance. I'm particularly fond of Griffin Dunne's Sylvain.

I just binged the whole series last week.   Doesn't take too long since the episodes are only 30 minutes.   For those who don't know, this show is by the creator of Transparent, and virtually everyone who worked on the show, other than the actors (many of whom are male) are women.  I felt that the vibe of the show was similar to Transparent, but also like something Lena Dunham might make in about 10 years.  The characters are not particularly likeable, and their pretensions are skewed.   The show is based on an autobiographical novel by Chris Krause, and that's the name of the main character in the show.   The "shocking" title is connected to a character played by Kevin Bacon whose name is Dick.  He's an artist supposedly based on Donald Judd. It takes place at an artist's colony in Marfa, Texas.  Lots of sex, nudity, references to menstruation.

I'd like to know what some of you enlightened men think of the series.   They almost lost me in the 2nd and 3rd episode, but then I was pulled back in and started to find Kevin Bacon pretty attractive.  And the women too.  Not so much Griffin Dunne, although he was funny/sad.

I LOVED this series, and am sad it's over.  I loved the acting, the script, the humor, the sadness, the view of artists...  It was great! (And that scene Diane with Kevin in the hotel room.  OMG)

I started episode #1 a few weeks ago and lost interest in it.  @Diane you are right, the characters are NOT likeable.  I'm planning on trying again when I'm more in the mood for this sort of thing.  When I tried it I was looking for things more in line with Kimmy Schmidt so this was definitely not a good fit for me at that moment.   :)
