Title: Buñuel
Post by: MartinG on Jun 27, 2017, 01:30 PM
May as well start this thread, thought I.

This rather dubious website (http://www.newyorkcitytheatre.com/theaters/to-be-announced/bunuel.php) seems to think there are fixed dates this October, but every other source, (Playbill, BWW etc.) seem to agree next Spring is more realistic. Anyone picked up anything else?

I was thinking of starting this thread myself, but hadn't seen that page. They seem to be prepared to sell tickets, though when you click on the button it informs you that no tickets are available. Not suprising, given that they don't even know what the venue will be. It's supposed to open at the Public, but the Public's 2017-2018 season list (https://www.publictheater.org/Public-Theater-Season/2017-2018-Season/) doesn't mention it, so that seems unlikely. I think the New York City Theatre website may be jumping the gun a bit by creating a page for ticket sales, but maybe they know something we don't. One can only hope.

I have another explanation.  Russian Hackers.

Or some 400-pound guy in his bedroom.

I'm sure everyone saw this piece (http://www.broadwayworld.com/article/BWW-Exclusive-Sondheim-Knocks-Riedels-Reporting-Says-His-New-Musical-Was-Never-Called-BUNUEL-20170426), but I just thought I'd add it here for posterity.

So Bunuel was just the working title/file name and it will probably come out under an as-yet-to-be-determined title sometime in 2018. Good to know.

Re-reading my post, I now feel that I come off pompous or pretentious like an insider.  The way info gets distributed these ways...but still, since I am a Public member and they *sometimes* tells us some things first...

No pomposity inferred @Bobster, we rely on you for the dope from the horse's mouth, as it were.  :D 🏇

Public Theater announces 2018-19 season (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/05/theater/public-theater-glenn-close-bob-dylan.html)

Quote from: Michael Paulson, New York TimesThe season will not include a new musical by Stephen Sondheim, based on two films by Luis Buñuel (http://www.nytimes.com/1983/07/30/obituaries/luis-bunuel-dies-at-83-film-maker-for-50-years.html), that the composer at one point had hoped would be ready for a production at the Public Theater last year (https://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/03/theater/stephen-sondheim-musical-thomas-ades-opera-bunuel-fall-2017.html).  A spokeswoman for the Public, Candi Adams, said "it's a musical in development, and we will happily be doing it when it's ready."

Well, maybe next year...

Though published last year, this didn't come to my attention until just now:

https://www.everythingsondheim.org/everything-we-know-and-dont-know-about-sondheims-surrealist-collaboration-with-david-ives/

Did we know that Ives was no longer on the project?  I don't think I knew that.
:'(

I actually followed that link from the NYT review (https://www.nytimes.com/2019/07/25/theater/road-show-review-sondheim.html) of Encores! Off-Center's Road Show redux, which I'm seeing Saturday night after having missed all previous versions over the years.  Green's pessimism as to the likelihood of Buñuel ever seeing the light of day may be reasonable under the circumstances, but I tend to agree with the commenter who found its inclusion in this review unnecessary and a bit "ghoulish".
