Title: The First Five Words
Post by: Chris L on Jun 20, 2017, 09:29 AM
George isn't here yet (though I expect to see him soon), but I'm going to steal one of his old games. As a clue, give the first five words (give or take a couple of words) of a song, be it pop, rock or Broadway. (We have no restrictions here on musical taste.) The first person to correctly guess what song the lyrics are from gets to give the next clue. I'll start with an easy one:

Isn't it warm? Isn't it rosy?

We'll stick with the easy ones for now: We become indiscreet eating sweet after sweet

Don't know if it won any Tonys at all because that year was pretty much dominated by one show. But the show has had a second life in regional theatre, and personally I think it has a lot to say about the human condition.

I should have known Kathy's lyric because (a) I know that The Full Monty is one of her favorite shows and (b) I must have listened to that score a dozen times about a decade or so ago. But damned if I remembered how that song began.

Anyway, the current lyric is...

"You don't know that I..."

BTW, it's cricket to google lyrics if the game seem to have stalled out.

I don't think I've ever heard it sung.  Ever.  I love ya, but I feel compelled to say that I doubt this clue will jog anyone's memory.  I gave up and did a web search.  The song is very, very famous, and one of the most recorded in history.  I daresay there are few reading this who don't own at least one recording of it (I own several).

As Martin points out, the verse is often left off of modern (i.e., Sinatra on) recordings, but it does sound familiar. More recent recordings often put it back in, so I'll listen to some Linda Ronstadt and Rod Stewart albums to see if I can catch it. ;)

This was a 2013 pop song that Wikipedia says was the largest-selling single of that year. It was nominated for Best Song at the next year's Oscars. The title is  a single word.
(And if I was aware of it, most people must have been aware of it, because I stopped keeping up with pop music years ago.)

Still no guesses? The song lost the Oscar to "Let It Go" from Frozen, though I like to think it was a close race because I like both songs. Weird Al Yankovic did a parody of it that featured a bevy of comedians and comic actors in the video. The title has five letters in it.

I'm not sure how many more clues I can come up with. If nobody gets it by Friday afternoon I'll probably go with a different song.

Major prog rock group from the 70s. This was probably their biggest radio hit (though another song contained the memorable lines "Seven virgins and a mule/Keep it cool, keep it cool"). This one is very slow, very moody, until the synths kick in (where it's still pretty moody, actually).

Amy couldn't get it either until I sang the first line, at which point she had it immediately. Which shows you how much attention people pay to rock lyrics. ;)

Would it help it I said the name of the group consisted of the last names of three musicians?

Yes, it is in 3/4 time!
In fact, it's prominently featured on a mixtape I made in college (inspired by A Little Night Music) entirely of songs in 3/4 time (as is "Lucille," which is what reminded me of it).

Something swam into my head driving to work to the effect that it might be that Barry Manilow one that goes something like

When will I kiss you?
When will dum de dum da?
When will I hold you again?

Which I don't think is the title. There may be the name of a town involved. Otherwise struggling.   :)
Title: Re: The First Five Words

Martin, you are correct in everything, including the artist, the time signature and the geographical reference (although it's to a region, not a town), so I'm going to give it to you.  It's Barry Manilow's "Weekend in New England," whose title is never really spelled out in the lyrics as such, though the words "New England" are in there.

Congratulations!

The best bass lines of all time, in my opinion, are the Smithereens' "Blood and Roses" and Bela Fleck & the Flecktones' "The Sinister Minister." The second one definitely isn't the answer, as it's an instrumental.
