I need to call someone about the toilet that sorta worked last week. I flushed it today, and it flushed OK, but the tank didn't refill with water. That's what it was doing earlier, before it started to pretend to work. It just isn't very high on my list of priorities. I am guessing that it will behave itself and work just perfectly when a plumber does come out and look at it.

Not trying to be pessimistic, but you should try to move the plumber up on your list of priorities.  I don't know much about plumbing but if it ran dry at one point I'd be a little afraid it could decide to overflow as well.  But that's me.  

I also agree that it will work perfectly once someone who is paid to be there flushes it.
