While Tom is spending some time in Arizona, our temperatures have moderated, and it's forecast to be in the high 60s today, which I will gladly take. It also should be nicer for Bernadette, because when we've been coming home from walks, she's been flopping down on the floor near the AC vent.

Where I ate on Sunday:

I had the feijuada.

AND... someone ate another pair of my underwear.

That Brazilian place looks tasty!

The weather here has been crisp and fall-like, with mild-to-cool temperatures, and I'm hoping it will last.  Yesterday night (Saturday 10/2) I met a couple of friends for dinner at a supercute Latin-fusion place right down the block from my mom's apartment to talk about a play they want me to design next summer.  Great company, delightful atmosphere -- and the food was even more delicious than I remembered from the one other time I've been there.

My mom herself always resists this place because, at 86 and never an adventurous eater, she's categorically intimidated by most ethnic menus.  But I'm pretty sure she'd like a lot of this food: delicious croquettes; tacos for days, each more savory than the last; and a flan for dessert that finally, spectacularly made me see the point of flan, along with some chocolate churros that likewise redefined the dish for me.  Plus, besides being mere steps from her door, the place itself sits on a leafy corner directly facing Fort Tryon Park and is completely charming.

So I'm gonna renew my efforts to persuade her before it gets too cold for sidewalk dining (or for the restaurant to keep its tall windows, which comprise most of its street-facing front wall, open).  Maybe I can even enlist my friends to help: we did agree we should meet there again -- as one does, but I got the sense they meant it -- and as charm offensives go, these two are pretty irresistible.
